Most of the pieces gathered in this volume were written before Schumann was 30 - when when he was writing many of his greatest piano works and shortly before the outpouring of songs that celebrated his engagement to Clara. Schumann's Albumleaves encapsulate this writing in beautiful, miniature form, exploring the warmth and resonance of the piano.

Easy, characterful pieces by two distinguished teachers are presented in this album for young beginners. Well written for the early grades, the pieces provide useful practice of first aspects of technique, and have been popular with teachers for over 50 years.

The compositions of Stephen Heller (1813-1885), a prolific composer of music for piano, were known for their musical interest and touches of charming ingenuity. His popular studies, twenty of which are gathered together in this easy to moderate collection, were no exception and are small masterpieces of phrasing, colour and rhythm.

The Russian composer Alexander Grechaninov (1864-1956) studied under Rimsky-Korsakov at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and later moved to Paris before settling finally in New York. This charming collection is one of a number he wrote for children, and makes an excellent album for beginners.

Daniel Gottlob Turk (1750-1813), was responsible for the most influential keyboard tutor of its day, the monumental Klavierschule. He also wrote these two books of pieces to accompany it. Progressing from simple two-part pieces to more complex works practising various aspects of technique, the albums provide excellent material for early grades.

Anatol Lyadov (1855-1914) was a Russian composer, conductor, teacher, and collector and arranger of folksongs. Although he wrote few large-scale works, he did compose numerous piano miniatures which abound in lyrical charm. Eighteen of these are collected in this album to provide varied moderate to difficult repertoire for the pianist.

Not so much 'easy-going' pieces as pieces with a sense of 'go'! Lionel Salter's collection provides a set of straightforward, attractive pieces with plenty of rhythmic vitality and spirit for young beginners.
